The Ihlara Valley is the number one in Cappadocia, when it comes to the spectacular landscape. It is a little away from the rest of the Cappadocian sites can be a little difficult to get, but it is worth a whole day if you have a spare tire. Ihlara Valley is 100 km SW of Cappadocia. It is best to see the underground city (sakli Kent) Cappodica see firsthand the Ihlara Valley.
The gorge is 16 km long and both sides are lined with rock carved churches, about 100 in all. You can all the more important to them in a few hours but it is very pleasant to spend an afternoon following the river down into the valley and explore on your own. The gorge was carved into basalt columns (as seen in the picture) by the river. It is the best hiding places in early Christianity, when the religion was banned by the Romans in the valley each hole is either a church or a house.
The rise and especially from the gorge can be demanding and probably should not be tried if you're feeling frail. To get the most out of your time here a whole day and a picnic is a good idea and will repay the efforts to admire relaxed days pottering about the churches and the valley of the beautiful landscape.
