The world-I battlefields known as Gallipoli are only 15 km west of Canakkale. It is located on the European side of Turkey, where as Çanakkale in the Asia-site. Gallipoli is the name of a city 40 kilometers east of the battlefield, and it is called in Turkish Gelibolu, where the name comes from.
