Avanos is the pottery center of Cappadocia. The town lies on the banks of the Kizilirmak, which means that the Red River. The river gets its name from the sound, that they deposit - the caly that is used for pottery in Avanos is famous for.
The main street of the town has many shops and workshops sale and simply decorated pots and plates and you can see the potters at work with kick-wheels, the design of which remained unchanged for generations. Many of the workshops will encourage you to have a go themselves. Groups of tourists come in all the time, and there are always a few people willing to give it a go - always good for a few laughs.
Avanos is a possible base for excursions in Cappadocia with accommodation and services available at reasonable prices. Sights of the city include the caravanserai, a restored Han (travellers "gas station") and the Ozkanak underground city, a smaller version of this in Kaymakli and Derinkuyu.
