According to Skyscanner, this summer season more tourists prefer having their holidays in Turkey than having such in Greece. Searches for flights to Turkey are 159% higher than searches for flights to Greece and it seems that Turkey will take a significant slice of summer tourists from rival Greece. The reason for that is the negative publicity Greece has suffered due to its fiscal situation and the strikes and rioting in Athens over the last few months. These events are coming at a time when plenty of people are booking their summer holidays and news for strikes and street clashes are not what they would like to listen to.
Greece’s tourist industry looks to take a hit and rival Turkey is well placed to take Greece’s share of the market. The one countries are at a similar distance from the UK, they have similar climates and attract similar clientele. For the British tourists who require sunny holidays it is easy to move from Greece to Turkey.
Booking information from travel agencies for the last few months also shows positive trend for Turkey’s tourist industry. Turkey (along with Egypt) is the five among holiday destinations which has the greatest growth for bookings for this summer season. Following France, it is the second most popular holiday location for the British, Italian and Dutch. Greece is on the third spot, but in contrast with Turkey, it records losses in comparison to the prior year.
Another reason for Turkey’s strong growth is probably connected to the significant rise in all-inclusive vacations and the fact that Istanbul is a European City of Culture 2010.
They wish you a happy Easter 2010 !
